We were in the office, with nothing much to do (in short, we were bored), when suddenly one colleague gave an exasperated sigh. I asked, "Why? What's wrong?" He told me that his PC's speaker finally gave up and died and his last hope for entertainment is gone. Hahaha. We made jokes about what a pitiful state his PC is in, with the screen and speaker problems. Then I remembered the song Bulag, Pipi at Bingi by Philippine folk singer, Freddie Aguilar who is more famously known for the song "Anak". It's been a long time since I heard this song and I did not really know the lyrics so I decided to look for it. In doing so, I came across this blog "Story Behind Your Favorite Song" (http://favesongdiary.blogspot.com/2009/08/bulag-pipi-at-bingi-freddie-aguilar.html), I think it's a nice piece to read, considering the writer has added some personal touch with her stories and an English translation of the song was provided. :)
Going back to the song... being blind, mute and deaf... it's true, most of us may think how pitiful it is to be disabled in such a way. I had an accident once, where a sharp foreign material left an abrasion on the cornea of my left eye and I had to wear a patch for a couple of weeks. In those days I've proven it's not really fun being a one-eyed pirate, not at all. And to think I still had one good eye then! But in this song, it tells of the good side of these disabilities that most of us fail to see... how lucky he is who do not have to see, hear and speak of the bad things in this world. He may be forever innocent, uncorrupted and shielded from the worldly temptations. Perhaps some of us are even more blind, deaf and mute than he is - not seeing the good things around us and in other people, not listening to our conscience and not speaking up for what is good and for the truth because we are so corrupted, living a crooked life which we mistakenly think is the ideal life. Thus, the song says... he is not far from the true world.
Here is the song and the lyrics, with English translation (with some minor parts I edited myself)...
Bulag, Pipi at Bingi
Madilim ang iyong paligid (Your surroundings are dark)
Hatinggabing walang hanggan (Midnights are never-ending)
Anyo at kulay ng mundo sayo'y pinagkaitan (You were denied the image and color of the world)
Huwag mabahala kaibigan (Do not worry my friend)
Isinilang ka mang ganyan (Though you were born like that)
Isang bulag sa kamunduhan (Blinded from worldliness)
Ligtas ka sa kasalanan (You're saved from sins)
CHORUS
Di nalalayo sa'yo ang tunay na mundo (You are not far from the true world)
Marami sa amin nabubuhay nang tulad mo (A lot of us live like you)
Di makita, di madinig, minsa'y nauutal (Can't see, can't hear, sometimes can't speak)
Patungo sa hinahangad na buhay na banal (Towards a life that's holy)
Ibigin mo mang umawit (You wanted to sing)
Di mo makuhang gawin (but you cannot)
Sigaw ng puso't damdamin (Shouts of your heart and feelings)
Wala sa'yong pumapansin (No one notices)
Sampung daliri, kaibigan (Ten Fingers, my friend)
Dyan ka kanila pakikinggan (With those you'll be heard)
Pipi ka man nang isinilang (You may be born mute)
Dakila ka sa sinuman (You are noble to everyone)
Ano sa iyo ang musika (What is music to you?)
Ito ba'y mahalaga (Is this important?)
Matahimik mong paligid (Your quiet surroundings)
Awitan ay di madinig (Where singing cannot be heard)
Mapalad ka o kaibigan (You are lucky, my friend)
Napaka-ingay ng mundo (The world is so noisy)
Sa isang binging katulad mo (A deaf person like you)
Walang daing walang gulo (There's no complain, no disorder)
